GDN Sucks
Look, I'm sorry. I know that a lot of people think GDN is the best thing since sliced bread, but I've always thought it was slow as heck and buggy to boot. Microsoft should have gone the extra mile and created a cross between Google News, Bashdork and SourceFourge and we'd all be dancing around with joy by now. Heck, I'd be paying for a service like that. What, a dedicated .NET portal with a half-decent moderated threaded discussion board, project services hosting and mondo news/blog aggregator? Tell me where to sign, kthx.
But today I finally went off the deep end. I was looking at the Patterns and Practices section of MSDN when I noticed the RTM version of Shadowfax was out, and I figured hey, let's give it a whirl. But noooo. The project is hosted on GDN. Can I download it? Noooo. Even though I do have a GDN account, I have to "join the project" in order to be allowed to download the bits.
I'm sorry, but that's absolutely retarded. What's the motivation behind this? Tracking usage? That's what effin' server logs are for. That project has almost 2,000 "members". How exactly does that help the authors? Wow, we have a gazillion members and 600 posts in the message board. We must be cool. Give me a break.
They can keep their code. There's no way I'm going to go through a registration process to download it, painless and quick as it might be. That's ridiculous.
